Ormond Beach Hometown History ......Ormond Beach a special place populated with Native Americans and developed by ship builders, sugar cain planters, railroad magnates and hoteliers. Ormond Beach became the location for millionaire's vacation homes & automobile manufacturers in the early 20th century. In 1903 the automobile hit the beach racing on the hard packed smooth sand. These first speed tournaments in the US earned Ormond Beach the title "Birthplace of Speed".
In 1886 the rail line came to Ormond building the first bridge over Halifax River in 1887. John Anderson & Joseph Price builders of that first bridge had pioneered their way to beachside to build a hotel known as Hotel Ormond. Grand Opening in 1888 with 75 rooms. Two years later Ormond Hotel was sold to Henry Flagler founder of east coast railway. Henry Flager contributed as a key figure to the development of east coast Florida, as well as founder of Palm Beach and Miami. By 1904, he expanded Ormond Hotel and added a railroad bridge to transport guest to the hotel. Anderson & Price managed the hotel until their deaths in 1911. John D. Rockefeller spent several winters in Hotel Ormond until he purchased the Casements in 1918 located across the street from Hotel Ormond. The Casements became his winter home until his death in 1937 age 97. The Ormond Hotel was demolished in 1992.
Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail (OSLT) is approximately 30 miles double loop of breathtaking nature lovers scenery. Bikers and convertible drivers paradise admiring rivers, creeks, marshes, Atlantic Ocean, beach, barrier island dunes and historic dwellings. Tomoka and Bulow Creek State parks are a must explore but bring your camera to capture the historic sites, wild life habitats over 160 different wildlife protected species including West Indian Manatee , southern live oaks & some of the largest in the south. Come walk the grounds or canoe where the Seminole Indians once resided before the Second Seminole War.
Humpback & Northern right whales travel the Atlantic shore line during migration seasons. It's common to see dolphins playing on your beach walks or sun bathing outings. If you're lucky enough you might witness the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins train their calves in the Halifax River. Loggerheads, green & leatherback turtles use the sandy beach shore line in Volusia County for nesting.
If you still are up for a local adventure take a beach cruise south on A1A to view the Ponce inlet Lighthouse second largest lighthouse in the US and originally constructed in 1887. The 175' climb will leave you with one of the most beautiful ocean and sunset memory views lasting a lifetime.
